Stéphanie Marin is a French designer born in 1973 who specializes in eco-design and functional art. Based in Nice, she founded her multidisciplinary studio, smarin, to explore the relationship between the human body and its environment. She began her career in 1990 by recycling textiles and gained early recognition with her "Habits Magiques" clothing line before shifting her focus to furniture and habitat design in 2004.
Her design philosophy centers on "tool-objects" that encourage healthy movement and collective interaction. She is most famous for "Livingstones," a collection of pebble-shaped cushions that mimic natural river stones and have been featured in major art institutions like the FRAC Grand Large. Her studio operates on a "short circuit" production model, manufacturing almost all pieces in-house using sustainable materials such as cork, solid spruce, and wool.
In recent years, she has expanded into therapeutic design, collaborating with medical experts to create objects that support cardiac coherence and restorative rest. Her modular systems, like "Play YET!", allow users to build furniture without screws or nails, emphasizing her commitment to adaptive and non-toxic living spaces. Her work has been commissioned for prestigious locations ranging from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the European Commission in Brussels.
