Tom Dixon is a self-taught British designer who rose to fame in the mid-1980s by welding salvaged scrap metal into sculptural furniture. Born in Tunisia and raised in London, his unconventional path included a stint as a bassist for the band Funkapolitan and a brief time at the Chelsea School of Art. He essentially taught himself to weld while repairing his motorcycle after an accident, which sparked his interest in industrial design.
In the late 80s, his collaboration with the Italian brand Cappellini produced the iconic S-Chair, which earned a spot in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. He later served as the Creative Director of Habitat for a decade, where he helped modernize the brand for a global audience.
In 2002, he launched his own eponymous brand, which has since become a global powerhouse known for its bold, metallic aesthetic. His work often features industrial processes like vacuum metallization, seen in his famous Melt and Mirror Ball lighting series. Beyond furniture and accessories, his Design Research Studio handles large-scale interior projects like the Sea Containers hotel in London. He has been awarded an OBE and a CBE for his significant contributions to British design.
