Philippe Starck born 18 January 1949, is a French industrial architect and designer who transformed the industry by championing "Democratic design," a philosophy focused on making high-quality, sustainable, and functional items available to everyone rather than just the wealthy. He first gained international fame in the early 1980s after redesigning the private apartments for President François Mitterrand at the Élysée Palace and creating the iconic Café Costes in Paris.
His vast portfolio of over 10,000 creations ranges from everyday household items like the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer and the Louis Ghost Chair to massive architectural projects and luxury hotels like the Delano in Miami. Beyond furniture, his influence extends to high-tech ventures, including designing Steve Jobs' superyacht, Venus, and space housing modules. Throughout his career, Starck has maintained that an object’s ethical and functional value is more important than its aesthetic, often utilizing recycled materials and minimalist principles to create maximum impact with minimal resources.
