Tobia Scarpa
Back
Tobia Scarpa, born in Venice in 1935, is a pillar of Italian modernism who defined the aesthetic of accessible luxury.
Back
As the son of architect Carlo Scarpa, he built a legendary career alongside his wife, Afra Bianchin, beginning with experimental glasswork at Venini. Their partnership revolutionized furniture production through a long-standing collaboration with brands like B&B Italia, Cassina, and Knoll.
His most significant contribution lies in merging industrial technology with elegant, high-end comfort, best exemplified by the 1969 Compasso d' Oro-winning Soriana sofa and the Coronado, which pioneered the use of cold-molded foam. Beyond furniture, Scarpa's influence shaped the corporate identity of the Benetton Group for three decades, where he designed their industrial plants and headquarters. In his later years, he transitioned into high-profile architectural restoration and academia, focusing on preserving Italy's historical heritage while teaching at the IUAV University of Venice.
His work remains a permanent fixture in global institutions like MoMA and the Louvre.
