Born in 1954 in La Spezia, Stefano Giovannoni is a leading Italian
architect and designer often called the "King Midas of Design" for his
ability to create mass-market hits.
After graduating from the University
of Florence in 1978, he became a central figure in the Italian design
scene, collaborating with icons like Ettore Sottsass and founding the
King-Kong Production studio with Guido Venturini. His work helped define
the "Bolidism" movement, which emphasized a dynamic, streamlined
aesthetic influenced by 1930s futurism and comic book pop culture.
Throughout his career, Giovannoni has bridged the gap between high art
and commercial success by focusing on emotional, "playful" objects that
appeal to the general public. He is perhaps most famous for his
long-standing partnership with Alessi, where he designed the massive
"Girotondo" and "Mami" series, as well as the whimsical "Magic Bunny"
toothpick holder. For the furniture brand Magis, he created the Bombo
Stool, an instantly recognizable piece that remains one of the most
frequently imitated designs in modern history.
In recent years, he
transitioned from designing for others to launching his own brand,
Qeeboo. This venture allows him to explore his signature "Neo-Pop" style
further, producing iconic items like the Rabbit Chair.
His influence is
recognized globally, with many of his creations featured in the
permanent collections of the MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in
Paris.
